The Diaper Baker creates two or three tiered diaper cakes filled with baby essentials inside and out! Each tier is composed of premium Pampers Swaddler diapers. ALL ITEMS IN AND ON THE CAKE ARE USEABLE! No two cakes are alike as each cake is made especially for you!! The Diaper Baker also creates hangable diaper wreaths filled with newborn accessories and essentials. A wreath is the perfect way to welcome the new baby, as it can be hung on the hospital delivery room door. The Diaper Baker creates a variety of specialty items as well. Each item can be made to match a theme or baby registry. Every product designed by The Diaper Baker is practical and of great value!
What inspired you to launch your own website?
When my daughter was pregnant with my granddaughter, I made a diaper cake for her baby shower. Everyone was impressed with the outcome and it was truly the highlight of the shower. Shortly thereafter, I thought about how wonderful it would be to own my own business in this industry. My goal is to eventually leave my full-time job and be my own boss. I just love the idea of making a product that helps make this miraculous time in a woman's life even more memorable. It's a pleasure to be a part of that.
When did you launch your first website, and what was it?
My website first launched on 7/19/07 after months of website-building. The Diaper Baker is my first website. I don't intend on launching any others as I will only improve this one.
How did you decide on a name for your website?
Ahhh...the notorious question. I actually spent many nights pondering this myself. I knew I needed a name that was catchy, relevant the the products in which I make, and easy to remember. Creativity is really the true answer. Someone who makes cakes is a baker. I make diaper cakes, therefore, I am The Diaper Baker.
What makes it different from other, similar offerings?
I feel that my overall product differs from others in many ways. The quantity of products offered on my cakes is more than most. Each tier of my cake is covered with a blanket or hooded towel as others out there do not cover and expose the diapers. I feel that this changes the overall appearance of the finished product. Another prominent difference is that EVERY item on my cakes is useable. I feel that this distinguishes my cakes from the competitor as well. Most importantly to the consumer, my products are offered at a reasonably lower price than the competition.
What is your eventual goal? (To sell it, keep it for income, secure a book or other mainstream media deal?)
My goal is to keep the website and business for income. My plan is to resign from my current place of employment and work for myself.
How does your investment of time and money balance against your success?
I am a strong believer of the saying "you've got to give, to get" and that's exactly the theory that I put into this. I had to give money in order to make money. However, I don't feel as though that you can actually put a monetary value on success. Success to me comes from within.
If you had an unlimited development budget for development, how would you change your site?
If I had an unlimited development budget I probably would have paid for professional training and guidance on website building. This was probably the hardest challenge for me as I had never done anything of that nature before. In addition, I would have purchased a shopping cart that holds more products than mine currently does.
If your site got really big, really quickly, would you be able to keep up with the demand?
Yes, I would be able to keep up with the demand. As I said earlier, I would leave my place of employment and divert all of my time and attention to my site. I am looking forward to this occurance.
What unexpected costs and headaches have you had to deal with?
I don't think any unexpected costs have arose. I expected all of the costs thus far. I really haven't had any headaches with my site or products either. It has sincerly been a smooth transition.
What has been your biggest challenge?
Biggest challenge...Competition. Whenever competition arises, it is always a challenge. After the challenge of building a website, I was faced with the question of how to promote my site effectively. This is another challenge that I continue to face.
What method has been most successful for promoting your website?
The internet has been my most successful way of promoting my website so far. I am also a strong believer that Word Of Mouth is single-most effective way for promotion. Both methods have worked to my advantage and I am very thankful for that.
How has running your website differed from your expectations?
Running my own website really has not differed from my expectations at all. I enjoy what I do.
How long have you run the site already, and how long will you continue to keep it up if you don't enjoy big gains in traffic, income or popularity?
My site has been in effec since July of 2007. If I do not find large gains in traffic or income then I will continue running the site until I do! All new businesses need have a chance to develop. It does not occur overnight. Ironically, I create products for people who are expecting a baby. This website is My Baby!
